Finally started

So, after much procrastination, I've finally put pen to paper and started writing, well technically I haven't started writing, I've just jotted down some notes (and basic sketches) on the plot, settings, ideas for specific scenes but my main focus right now is character design.

In the past I have written short films, animations and a couple of short stories but the majority of those were for school and the ones that weren't usually didn't get finished. This is my first attempt at writing something so big. Since I have a (very) bad habit of starting things, and not finishing them (like the last animation I planed on doing, I wrote several stories, designed characters, storyboarded, digitally made characters and backgrounds but it was never animated). I plan on setting reasonable goals throughout the writing process, to keep myself motivated, with the ultimate goal of getting published. Honestly I'm not expecting to get published, finishing a book that I'm happy with is all I really want to do, but getting published would be the cherry on the top. I'v had some of my design work displayed in public and there is no group of words that can describe the feeling you get when you see something you have created, out there for the whole world to see.

Since I have very little knowledge of what I am actually doing, I will be doing a lot of research into writing techniques, and I will be taking any advice/tips from anyone who is willing to give it.

Until next time.

  1. Hi, Kane! Thanks for stopping by my blog today.

I started writing *seriously* last year. I've written plenty of papers and stories for school, but I'd never attempted anything so big as a book before. It's more than a little intimidating. If it weren't for the support of the blogging community, I don't know if I would have made it this far. There are so many writers / bloggers who are very generous with their time and knowledge. If you need help or have questions, just ask -- they'll answer.

    Have a great weekend!

  3. Hi Kane :) Welcome to the fray! I started writing more seriously last year, but spent most of the year just soaking things in - once you get started reading all of the great blogs out there by other writers, aspiring writers, agents, etc., you'll be amazed at how much you'll learn and what a great, supportive community the writing blogging world is. I know so much now that I didn't before and am sort of restarting the novel I started this same month last year when I began blogging. I feel like I have a much better foundation under my feet. Glad you found us all! :)

  4. Best of luck to you! I'm in the same boat in that I start a number of projects but never get around to finishing them. In the case of writing I've barely started the damn thing for a few years :P

  5. Hey Kane! You need advice on all that stuff, you've come to the right place. The blogging community is very supportive, helpful and knowledgable. Clarissa Draper and Elizabeth Spann Craig are bloggers who post excellent writing tips.

  6. Hi Kane - Thanks for the follow. I'm a lot like you. I spent a long time (highschool) starting a lot of projects i never finished. I found out two things that help me
    1. write the first draft as fast as possible, so i don't get bored.
    2. i'm an outliner. So i like to have a bare bones outline to keep me on track.

I actually follow like the first 4-5 steps of the snowflake method and that seems to help quite a bit (you can just google snowflake method if you're interested)

    Good luck!

  7. Hi Kane! Thanks for stopping by my blog too. I hope you do finish it. It's an amazing feeling knowing you've actually written a whole novel. There's nothing like it!

  8. Thanks for the follow Kane. I wanted to stop by to return the favor. Nice to meet ya, man!

Also, I have to second the notion that you're in exactly the right place. I didn't start blogging until after I'd finished the first draft of my novel, and I wish I had done it the other way round. Best of luck to you, sir!

  11. I will confirm what everyone above already said, the writer/blogging community is very supportive.

I have some links on my sidebar that are excellent places to start, blogwise.
Also, there are lots of excellent books on writing.

My biggest piece of advice is to really study craft and write every day, even if just for 15 minutes.
Good luck with your journey. :)
